FIGHT THE TAX! (1/15/10)
Your assistance is needed! Washington State is attempting to raise taxes on all tobacco products! This tax increase would raise the price of cigarettes by $1 per pack, 20% increase for rolling and pipe tobacco, and worst of all, an increase from $0.50 to $2.50 per cigar in state tax.
DO YOUR PART by contacting your state legislators and tell them you oppose House Bill 2493 and Senate Bill 6443.
Call the legislative hotline at 1-800-562-6000 and tell them you oppose House Bill 2493!
It takes two minutes. You'll speak to a representative who will forward your opinion to your legislators. If we all call, we'll make a difference.
Of all tyrannies, a tyranny exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end, for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

Ongoing FDA updates (12/20/09)
Several months ago the FDA received regulatory control over tobacco products in the United States. Congress mandated their first action as the ban on flavoring additives in cigarettes. This flavoring ban applies to tailor-made cigarettes, rolling tobacco, and rolling papers. All flavors except for menthol are now illegal additives. Congressman and Senators insist that this is necessary to discourage new smokers. Behind the scenes, however, a certain cigarette giant has lobbied for the ban in order to reduce competition in the market.
Stores are not permitted to sell any flavored cigarettes, even if they are older stock. Djarum, the largest importer of clove cigarettes in America, has developed a line of clove little cigars that are changed just enough to be legal. We carry the full line of Djarum Cigars and Dreams Cigars.
At this time, hookah tobacco, pipe tobacco, blunt wraps, and cigars are not subject to flavoring additive bans. While flavored rolling papers were initially subject, recent court action has determined that if flavored rolling papers are not sold for tobacco use then they may be legally sold. This means that we may only sell you flavored rolling papers if there is an understanding that their use be limited to "legal smoking herbs".
If you have any questions about tobacco regulation or taxes, please feel free to call or visit.
Ongoing SCHIP updates
On April 1st, 2009 the federal tax rate for tobacco products increased. Every tobacco product has increased in price. Rolling tobacco has the largest increase. While this is a new federal tax, many state taxes (including Washington State) charge their tobacco taxes as a percentage of the wholesale price, which includes any federal taxes. Therefore, if the federal government raises their tax rate $1.00, Washington State collects an additional $0.75 (75% state tax rate). Federal rolling tobacco taxes increased from $1.09 per pound to $24.69, which translates to about $43.00 per pound when it sells in Washington State. This tax led many manufacturers to raise their prices ahead of the tax to absorb any drop in sales, creating a triple tax increase.
